Ligue One Season 2024/25

Round Nine Review

The French Ligue One continued over the weekend where the match of the round was between Marseille and Paris Saint Germain

It was a round where Monaco were beaten again as they lost the grip to pile pressure on the league leaders as red cards reigned supreme in four games. So what were the major talking points of the round?

The Le Classique belongs to PSG

PSG showed their intent to defend their league title when they beat 10-man Marseille 3-0 in the Le Classique at Orange Velodrome on Sunday.

The win moved the Parisien side three points clear at the top of the table after Monaco’s defeat to Nice, with Luis Enrique’s side extending its unbeaten record away from home to 29 matches.

Nuno Mendes’s cross was spilt by Geronimo Rulli, with Joao Neves on hand to open the scoring with his first goal for the club just after seven minutes. It then went from bad to worse for Marseille when Amine Harit was shown a straight red card for a high challenge on Marquinhos, leaving Roberto De Zerbi’s side with an uphill task of salvaging anything from the game.

PSG doubled her advantage nine minutes after Harit’s dismissal when the unfortunate Leonardo Balerdi turned the ball into his own net. Bradley Barcola punched a third for the visitors before the break, firing home his eighth league goal in nine games to seal the win.

Nice beat Monaco in Derby de la Cote d’Azur

OGC Nice ended their six-game winless streak by coming from behind to beat 10-man AS Monaco 2-1 in the Derby de la Cote d’Azur.

Breel Embolo netted his first Ligue 1 goal of the season just before the break when he was slipped through on goal by Maghnes Akliouche, keeping his nerve to find the bottom corner.

Evann Guessand leapt impressively to head home an equaliser from Ali Abdi’s free-kick. In the aftermath, an almighty scuffle broke out with almost everyone involved, but Vanderson was singled out and picked up a second yellow card to reduce Monaco to 10 men.

Nice turnaround was complete with 20 minutes to go thanks to Gaetan Laborde, who capitalised on Krepin Diatta’s diabolical backpass to race through on goal and dink the ball over Majecki.

That goal ultimately delivered three much-needed points that elevated Nice to eighth.

Red Cards reign supreme in the week

Four red cards were dished in the French top-flight league this weekend. The first of the cards was experienced on Friday night when Le Havre’s Christopher Operi was sent off deep in stoppage time as they went 0-1 down to Rennes.

Monaco were to play the second half of their game against Nice with nine men after Vanderson was given his marching orders in first-half stoppage time with Montpellier finishing the game with ten men too in their 0-3 loss to Toulouse following Teji Savanier red card in the 51st minute.

Marseille was the last team in the week to receive a red card after Amine Harit was sent off in the 20th minute. They lost ground to PSG.
