Bayern Munich showed plenty of rustiness in a hard fought 1-0 away win over Borussia Monchengladbach. The resumption of the league after the winter break saw the log leaders battle to break down the resolute defence of the home side. There was huge pressure on Bayern as their lead at the top of the log was whittled down to just a single point, following Bayer Leverkusen’s win over Dortmund on Friday. They started the match in fine fashion and were unlucky not to be awarded a penalty midway through the first half when the opposition defender handled the ball but VAR instead ruled no penalty. There was some justice though in the second half when they did get the penalty after Lukas Ullrich brought down Michael Olise in the box. Harry Kane stepped up to the spot and duly dispatched the ball to give Bayern the lead. The Bavarian giants held on for the win to restore their four point lead at the top of the log.
Leverkusen make it six wins on the trot
Bayer Leverkusen faced a difficult away game to Borussia Dortmund on the resumption of the league after the winter break. They started the match four points behind Bayern Munich and anything but a win would have been disastrous for Xabi Alonso’s men. The defending champions started the match like a house on fire and took the lead just 25 seconds into the game when Nathen Tella gave them the lead with an excellent volley. The makeshift home team’s defence was breached again seven minutes later when Patrik Schick found the back of the net. Dortmund managed to pull a goal back in the 12th minute when Jamie Gittens got on the score sheet but the visitors restored their two goal cushion in the 18th minute when Schick grabbed his brace. After four goals in the first half, the second period was very scrappy although Dortmund never gave up and scored a second from the penalty spot.. Leverkusen however, held onto the 3-2 lead which took them within a point of Bayern, for at least 24 hours.
Frankfurt and Leipzig move into top four
Eintracht Frankfurt moved into the Champions League spots after they beat St. Pauli 1-0. They can thank Egyptian hitman Omar Marmoush for the win as the striker notched up his 14th goal of the campaign. The win took them into the third spot with 30 points. RB Leipzig started the year off with a convincing 4-2 victory over Werder Bremen. Xavi Simons made a successful return from injury when he gave his side the lead in the 24th minute. Bremen equalised just two minutes later but the Red Bull side did not panic and restored their lead just before the halftime when Simon bagged his brace. Two further goals in the second half secured the points despite conceding a late consolation goal for the visitors. Leipzig are also on 30 points but have an inferior goal difference to Frankfurt.
Heidenheim win to ease relegation fears
Heindenheim was the only team in the bottom five that claimed a win in the past round of matches. The 2-0 win over Union Berlin saw them take their points tally to 13 which is now five ahead of second bottom Holstein Kiel. They are also now just a point away from exiting the dreaded drop zone. Bottom teams Bochum and Holstein Kiel brief renaissance before the winter break quickly ended as they were beaten by Mainz and Freiburg respectively. It is looking more likely that the bottom two will be playing their football in Bundesliga 2 next season.
