Toronto FC II vs Chicago Fire FC II

Bayern move eight points clear at the top

Bayern Munich took a giant step to securing the Bundesliga title when they beat relegation strugglers Heidenheim 4-0. The win took them nine points clear of Bayer Leverkusen who were due to play a day later. Bayern dominated the opening half and wasted little time in breaking the deadlock. In the 12th minute, Harry Kane drilled a precise left-footed strike into the bottom corner, his fourth goal in three matches against this opponent. The goal was created by assist king Michael Olisse. The visitors kept up the pressure, with Raphaël Guerreiro drawing a routine save from Kevin Müller soon after. Their persistence paid off again when Konrad Laimer doubled the lead, calmly slotting home after a clever through ball from Serge Gnabry. The result was put to bed as early as the 36th minute when Kingsley Coman added a third goal.

Bayern were in cruise mode after the break but they still managed to add a fourth through the boot of Joshua Kimmich. Goalmouth action dried up in the final stages as Bayern conserved their energy and avoided going four games without a win across all competitions for the first time this season. They remain in the driver’s seat for the title, while Heidenheim are still rooted in the relegation play-off place after an 11th home league defeat. Bayern will need a catastrophic drop in form to prevent them from claiming the crown for a record extending 33rd time.

Leverkusen’s title defence left in tatters

Champions Bayer Leverkusen started their match against St. Pauli nine points behind leaders Bayern Munich and knew anything other than a win will see their title defence all but over. They looked like a team on a mission and were unlucky not to take the lead when Jeremie Frimpong missed the target with the goal at his mercy. However, it didn’t take long for Frimpong to make his mark, going down under the challenge of Siebe Van der Heyden out wide which led to the game’s opening goal. The resultant free-kick was whipped to the back post by Alejandro Grimaldo, finding the head of Patrik Schick, who netted his 18th league goal of the season. St Pauli continued to grow in the match and had a goal disallowed in the 74th minute for handball. Leverkusen did not heed the warning and the home side duly equalised in the 78th minute. The champions could not find the winner and are now eight points behind Bayern with just four matches to play.

Top four race going down to the wire

The battle for top four positions promises to be one of the tightest in recent years. There are just four points separating fourth placed RB Leipzig and a fast finishing Dortmund in seventh place. Eintracht Frankfurt missed the chance to make third spot their own after they drew 0-0 away to Augsburg. The result sees them on 52 points, three ahead of RB Leipzig. The Red Bull side also drew at home to Holstein Kiel. Dortmund continued their resurgence as they won their third match in four games to move up to seventh spot. Freiburg beat Hoffenheim 3-2 to maintain the pressure on Leipzig who are now just a point ahead of them.

Holstein Kiel keep slim survival hopes alive

Holstein Kiel produced their performance of the season when they went to the home of Leipzig and came away with a draw. They took the lead a minute before the halftime break but conceded a penalty in the 74th minute which the home side duly converted. They are now just three points behind Heidenheim who occupy the relegation/promotion playoff position. Bochum continued with their alarming slump as they lost their fifth match in a row. Despite this horror run, they are just two points behind the relegation/ promotion playoff. It is now almost certain that the two relegated teams will come from the current button three as St. Pauli moved eight points clear of the drop zone.
